Capacity Increase for Existing Steel Bridges Using Prestressed Cables

    Get PDF
In the present study, a practical approach is proposed for geometric nonlinear analysis of existing steel bridges. The approach is defined by finite element displacement direct rigidity procedure, which is based on an iterative procedure. Tangent rigidity matrix is used for cable truss and/or framed steel structures formed by finite elements. Hence, effects of prestressed cables in system rigidity can be taken into account in the analyses. Moreover, stressing effects on cables are taken into account with equivalent temperature change. The research has three main parts. In the first part, prestressed cables are investigated for capacity increase for steel bridges. In the second part, an iterative procedure is proposed for existing steel bridges that can be used for geometric nonlinear analysis. In the third part, a representative bridge is modeled and analyzed. In the model, first, the representative model is analyzed as it is existing form and then, it is analyzed with prestressed cables in two different forms. So, three different results are investigated for their structural behaviors. In the analyses, geometric nonlinear behavior is investigated and results are evaluated. As a result of the study, capacity change by using stressed cables is defined for existing bridges

The article is centered around the ethics of international relations. On the example of Russian-Turkish relations the authors discuss foundations and possible solutions of potential conflicts between these two countries. International relations are always context-bound and their development lies within the framework of multilateral dialogues, involving third parties. International relations are given in diachronic and synchronic aspects, which allow to identify ethic crises of the past and the present

In this article, by using Fibonacci difference matrix  and the notion of ideal convergence of sequences in random 2–normed space, we introduce some new spaces of Fibonacci difference ideal convergent sequences with respect to random -norm and study some inclusion relations, topological and algebraic properties of these spaces.

Xanthogranulomatous Endometritis: A Challenging Imitator of Endometrial Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is a distinguished histopathological entity affecting several organs, predominantly the kidney and gallbladder. So far, only a small number of cases of xanthogranulomatous inflammation occurring in female genital tract have been described, most frequently affecting the endometrium and histologically characterized by replacement of endometrium by xanthogranulomatous inflammation composed of abundant foamy histiocytes, siderophages, giant cells, fibrosis, calcification and accompanying polymorphonuclear leucocytes, plasma cells and lymphocytes of polyclonal origin. We present a case of a 69-year-old female complained of post menopausal bleeding and weight loss. Clinical preliminary diagnoses were endometrial carcinoma or hyperplasia and ultrasound was supposed to be endometrial malignancy, hyperplasia or pyometra by radiologist. Histopathological examination of uterus revealed xanthogranulomatous endometritis. Since xanthogranulomatous endometritis may mimic endometrial malignancy clinically and pathologically as a result of the replacement of the endometrium and occasionally invasion of the myometrium by friable yellowish tissue composed of histiocytes, knowledge of this unusual inflammatory disease is needed for both clinicians and pathologists

Cold-Formed Steel Framed Shear Wall Database

    Get PDF
The objective of this paper is to provide an introduction to a recently compiled database of cold-formed steel framed shear wall tests and demonstrate the application of this database for improving the understanding and modeling of cold-formed steel framed shear walls. Over the last 20 years a substantial number of cold-formed steel framed shear walls have been tested under monotonic and cyclic conditions. These tests provide the support for the cold-formed steel framed shear wall provisions provided in the North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing (AISI S240-15), the North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Systems (AISI S400-15), and the U.S. Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings standard (ASCE41- 17). The initial version of the database was assembled during the development of ASCE41-17. The database has recently been expanded to include additional tests, additional complete cyclic information from tests, additional fields regarding limit states and code predictions, and placed in a standardized format. The database consists of a central Excel spreadsheet, ordered plain text files for each individual test, and custom Matlab code for reading, processing, and plotting any desired subset of the database. As a new application of the assembled database the expected strength of cold-formed steel framed shear walls is explored. The information in the database is summarized herein, along with commentary on current code provisions, and areas of potential improvement and need

Subjective sleep and overall survival in chemotherapy-naïve patients with metastatic colorectal cancer

Backround: Sleep disorders are prevalent in patients with advanced cancer. Their impact on clinical outcomes is not well understood. Methods: A post-hoc analysis was conducted in 361 chemo-naïve patients with metastatic colorectal cancer completing twice the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire within a randomized international phase III trial. The study assessed the effect on overall survival (OS) of subjective sleep complaint, used as a normal or a time-dependent covariate (TDC), using a multivariate Cox proportional hazard model. Prognostic analysis was conducted on the whole study population and separately in each treatment arm (conventional FOLFOX2, or chronomodulated chronoFLO4). Results: Sleep problems were reported by 202 patients (56%) at baseline and by 188 (52%) on treatment. Sleep problems at baseline were independently associated with a higher risk of earlier death (HR: 1.36; p = 0.011), progression (HR: 1.43; p = 0.002) and poor treatment response (RR: 0.58; p = 0.016). TDC analysis confirmed the independent prognostic effect of sleep problems on OS (HR: 1.37; p = 0.008), while on treatment this effect was only observed using univariate analysis. The negative prognostic value of sleep problems on OS at baseline, on treatment, and as a TDC was greatest on chronoFLO4 compared to FOLFOX2. Conclusions: Subjective sleep problems are associated with poor clinical outcomes in metastatic colorectal cancer patients and affect chronotherapy effectiveness. There is a need for a well-tuned circadian timing system in order to increase chronotherapy activity. Prospective studies are needed for determining the impact of therapeutic approaches on sleep disorders upon quality of life and survival of cancer patients

Landscape architects differ from the other design related disciplines by including plant materials in their design. On a landscape project with various plant materials, a landscape architect is expected to conduct the most proper planting scheme of a site by taking into account the different size, growing requirements such as light and irrigation, and aesthetic and ecological functions of plants. Accordingly, it is important to know as many plant materials as possible with their characteristics as well as to build a suitable plant list after conducting some inquiries. As computer technology involves in every aspect of our life, these types of inquiries would be done easily and more efficiently by a computer generated database. In its simplest explanation, a database is a set of files, where the information is stored with a certain rational organization,in the computer. The purpose of this work is to generate a computer program to store, display, inquire, and add new information - when necessary - about the landscape plants. This work consists of two steps: the development of database user interface program, and adding the plant information to database. The database and its user-interface program (BitkiVt) developed in this research could not only be used as an educational tool but also be utilized by public and private landscape sector. Additionally, it is also a reference material for those interested in landscape plants as a hobby
